What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum tissue. The gums become swollen and irritated due to a plaque or calculus (tartar) buildup along the gum line.

The most common evidence that gingivitis exists is blood on your toothbrush or dental floss. Bleeding gums are not normal.

On the bright side, gingivitis is preventable and even reversible either by practicing good brushing and flossing techniques or other interdental tooth cleansing.

Conversely, if poor hygiene continues, gingivitis may progress to periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is the disintegration of bone and structure supporting the teeth. And unlike gingivitis, periodontal disease is irreversible. You may however stop its progress through proper and regular hygiene.
